This is one of the lots that have come from a group of small farmers in the Sidama region of Southern Ethiopia. With the changes to export laws in Ethiopia, small producers have been able to export themselves since 2018.
We (BIRCHBACH & Falcon Coffees) have been working with them on good agricultural practises, QC and export logistics as well to give them access to market. Our agronomist in the South Temesgen visits them often in the year, helping them with preparation of the farms and then also with their processing during the harvest. Temesgen has also supported them with preparation for EUDR and the collection of the data for this.
Niguse Nara has 10 hectares of coffee spread across 3 different parcels of land in the Huro Hibiro village in Bensa, Sidama. He grows 74158 and 74160 varieties which are both selections from the Jimma research centre. These varieties were selected from wild plants in the Metu-Bishari forest in the Illuababora zone in Western Ethiopia.
Niguse's coffee is all processed and dried at his family home and he only produces naturals and anaerobic naturals.
This lot from Bombe Chilaga is picked, floated, separated and then dried for 20 days on raised beds.
